Gerhard Richter Painting

The art that inspires me most is as old as I am or even older. Modern is different from contemporary. When you look at my found-art you may be reminded of Rothko or Frankenthaler or... I would love to find a Motherwell.

There is a wonderful exhibit of this period at the Guggenheim through September 12: Art of Another Kind.  In addition to the works, all drawn from the museum's permanent collection, the exhibit celebrates the "tastebreaking" courage of curator James Johnson Sweeney. Everything being shown was produced between 1949 and 1960.

A contemporary artist who often comes to mind as an interesting composition forms in my viewfinder is Gerhard Richter.  I wish I could make it to Paris before a retrospective of his work closes on September 24.

A Richter quote from the English-language program: "I do not obey any intention, system or trend; I have no programme, style or pretention. I love uncertainty, infinity and permanent insecurity."

It would be fun to start at the Guggenheim then sail from New York to Cherbourg and catch the Richter exhibition. But there is only one transatlantic passage in September (Queen Mary II,Cunard) and it is traveling the wrong way (Southhampton to NYC on September 14). The big ships no longer dock at Cherbourg.
