I am ambivalent regarding graffiti.  It is my purpose to find unintentional beauty. Vandalism is fair game for my reframing.  But street art has become its own artistc genre. There is often intention toward beauty.  So... mostly I have avoided graffiti.

But walking from lunch at Katz's on our way to The Strand Bookstore, my son and I arrived at 190 Bowery Street (on the corner with Spring).  Despite every external appearance of being a derelict structure this is the home and gallery of the photographer Jay Maisel.  The first story of the late 19th Century bank is heavily adorned with layers and layers of graffiti, including -- the careful archaeologist might discern -- chalk drawings by Keith Haring (I have read).

As my son commented, "This is too easy.  I like your rusted posts better."  It was quicker than usual.  I'm not sure about easier. My work is small.  Most of the graffiti is expansive.  I wanted to find interesting emergent combinations, not the intentional work of a single creator.  Not sure if this is heresy or an encounter with grace, perhaps a more common source of confusion than we might think.
